The Story

From Homeless To Headliner

Ignacio "Nacho" Contreras was born in El Molino, a village high in the mountains of Mérida, Venezuela, nearly 3,000 metres above sea level. His family didn't have much, and by six years old, he was already working, carrying loads through the mountains to help put food on the table. There was no time to just be a kid. There was work, and there was survival.

At seventeen, he left El Molino for Mérida city, chasing something more than the mountains could offer him. Instead, he found himself homeless, with almost nothing to his name and no clear idea what came next.

Boxing is what held his life together. He was good at it, and he was relentless about it, and through it he found people who believed in him. Friends from the gym helped him find work, find a place to live, find his footing again. The sport didn't just give him a career. It gave him a way forward.

Years later, he got the chance to do something almost no one from El Molino gets to do: move to Australia and build a future on the other side of the world. He landed in Geelong, and Corner Boxing became more than a gym. Under head coach Jason Caine, and with Alejandro Chueca coaching and managing his career, Nacho found a team that believed in what he could become, and a community that started showing up for him. Now he's the one giving back, inspiring the young boxers coming up behind him to see that everything is possible with discipline, desire, and repetition.

The goal has always been bigger than any one fight. Win the Australian title. Keep building a life here. Eventually, become Australian. And beyond that, the dream he's carried since he was six years old in the mountains: become a world champion, and make sure the people he loves never have to struggle the way he did.

This isn't only the story of a Venezuelan boxer trying to make it. It's the story of a kid from the mountains of Mérida, fighting for the right to build a life in the place that gave him a shot, with Geelong behind him.

From carrying loads in the mountains at six, to sleeping rough at seventeen, to a boxing ring on the other side of the world: Nacho has been fighting his whole life. Now he finally gets to do it for a living, and he's fighting his next round right here at home.
